MODULAR MADNESS IS OVER!

...Ok this keeps rejecting my images.  I'll give you my self-evaluation and then post pictures later.  I definitely think I could have done better.  I used the last few days of ideas to the best of my ability, but if I'd spent some more money I could have definitely made it bigger.  I thought about coiling or making it a spring, but that required a lot more bending and manipulating than I was able to manage.  I could have done a lot of things different, but I didn't and to be 100% honest, I'm 56% pleased with my project, but I am mostly glad it is over.

Word as image - progress and final.

Well unfortunately I didn't take many pictures of my project...well any...actually of the word as image projects.  SO, I'll walk you through it...I found the word motion and I went with that.  I really wanted to make the words move across the page physically disconnecting them but using their placement to connect them.  And then I had to search for a word that I could use the placement to contradict their literal meanings.  After a few days of losing a few of my projects and restarting many times...I got the words to move...So these are the things I scanned in...oh...and the server keeps rejecting my pictures...boo.

So, when I get them to work I will upload them.

Modular Madness driving me mad...

Again, no ideas as to how to format - but here goes the thought process...

"We're assigned the project...what do I do?  I go to work the next day and brainstorm.  I could use CDs and fishing line...that's an easy fix.  If it has to be bigger than me, how many CDs do I need?  I'll measure the CD and trace it on a piece and do the calculations.  Let's try it out.  I want to hang it from a wall and twist it and make a cyclone looking thing from it.  Let's try it out...fail.  Okay, what else could I use?  Fishing line...fishing line...fishing line...fishing line and forks?  Too wind-chimey...fishing line and buttons...too small.  Fishing line and car parts...not likely.  Fishing line and...and....and...golf balls?  Well, no...not fishing line...wire.  Wire through golf balls.  YES....what to do with the golf balls?  Make the motion of a golf ball being hit?  No, that is representational.  Against the rules...ok...well how about a water fall, motion like wave of golf balls?  There it is.  Lame, but...ok.  Here it goes...how big of a wire?  It needs to not bend unless purposely bent.  It needs to support the weight of the golf balls without falling over...it needs to be able to 'flow' out of the wall...so let's take a stroll around Lowes.  AAAAHHHAHH!  It was a threaded 1/4 inch metal....thing.  It was bendable, but sturdy.  Dad thinks we should bend it...didn't we decide NOT to bend it before golf balls are on it?  Okay, Dad knows best...5 pieces of metal bent...and 0 golf balls can fit on the curves.  GRRRREAT.  OH and how about the golf balls with surprises in the middle of them?  Gooey, or gushy?!  GROSS!  SO, dad replaces bent metal things - take them to WASH, they're NOT the right size!!!!  A day wasted....replace them again...now hating the idea of golf balls.  I think the water fall is stupid, I hate the wall and I hate golf balls.  My hands hurt, I've ruined two shirts and I hate golf balls.  Have I mentioned I hate golf balls?  I'm at an impasse (correct spelling??) let's ask Valerie...VALERIE?!?!?!?!  I HATE GOLF BALLS!!!!  Oh, well isn't she smart...use the building - duh Ashley.  HELLOOOOOO, but hey, these holes are the same size as this...ooooh and it makes bending it easier.  SUUUWHEEEET...now what?  Let's just go with it and see where it goes...and it went."

Cardboard Craze

I can honestly say I have no idea how to format my blog.  With that out of the way I can begin my self-evaluation of my cardboard craze project.  I attempted the gumtree fruit and all in all I can say I am pretty pleased.  I definitely recognize that I have some opportunities in the time management aspect of planning a project, but the final product was very much what I had in mind.  I underestimated the time it would take to 'rough' up the paper to make the curves/spikes and overestimated the time it would take to cut the cardboard into my funnel like shapes.  That resulted in having an inadequate amount of time to add the final touches to the funnels.  I also broke the original 'stem' in attempting to pick up my piece and therefore had to create a new one that was less pleasing than the original.

For me, this assignment was...ideal.  I had a definite object with definite features that I needed to replicate...there were guidelines, rules, expectations that were clearly defined.  I liked that.  I'm not a think outside of the box kinda gal...I'm workin on it, but for now I like the rules.  They're my friend.

fixation + very little focus = severe frustration

I have an issue completing things...ask anyone - I have no patience...and very little 'sticktoitiveness.'  I don't like taking on things that are going to take me more than an hour or so to complete - just like I don't like facing things that I'm not entirely sure I can master...which is why I'm in WASH, to face a fear and expand.

We'll begin with a confession - I adored a cardboard creation in the WASH room before we'd been given our assignment...I'd seen it (I'll have to take a picture) and thought - whoa, that is just awesome.  So I knew what I wanted to make before we'd even been given the options and I'm just glad I was given that as an option.

The mission (choose to accept it or get the heck outta WASH) - to replicate an item from nature with cardboard - bum, bum, bum - and the object I chose?

SweetGum

and the frustration begins...
BUT WHERE DO I BEGIN?  Well, I'm really not an 'outside of the box' thinker (get it?  We were using cardboard...) ::ahem:: so I wanted to make it as realistic as possible - I investigated my little friend here and started experimenting with the cardboard.  And this is what I got...

...the frustration continues...
And then after much repetition and annoyance I had that.
And quite possibly a few "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"s and "whatever, just whatever"s later I had this...
And for now, that is all I have.
